Mary Sterling married E. Wight Bakke a Yale University economics professor who held the Sterling Professor chair in Economics at Yale (appointed 1940)
Mary taught at Quinnipiac College from 1929 to 1953. She was dean of woman there from 1948 to 1953. Mary was a prolific writer both in her own right and as co-author with her husband E. Wight Bakke. She was a founding member of the New Haven Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends.
I had the great privilege of meeting Mary Sterling Bakke at her home Sterling Heights. Mary graciously showed me around the old homestead built by John Sterling in 1740. John was the grandson of William Sterling of Haverhill Mass & Old Lyme. At that time I did not know my relationship to Mary, I have since learned she was my 5th cousin 3 times removed, our common ancestor being William Sterling, father of James Sterling of Cornwall, CT. Mary took me down the hill to visit the Sterling Family Cemetary. She showed me the speciall tombstone covers she had made to protect Willilam of Haverhill & Old Lyme's stone from the ravages of winter.
Mary Sterling Bakke died 31 Jan 1987 at the Connecticut Hospice at Branford, CT. She was buried at Grove Street Cemetary, New Haven CT. Her husband, Edward Wight Bakke died Nov. 23, 1971 at New Haven, CT
